In 1910, Sarah Wheaten Downer, wife of Mantoloking founder Fredrick W. Downer, gave this house to Eloise Bloodgood and Captain Delavan B. Downer as a wedding gift. It was originally located on Rt. 35 at 1414 Ocean Avenue. There was a cove where Carpenter Lane is today and in 1984 the Cates (Downers) and the Posts (Carpenters) had the bulk head built. When the foundation was completed, the house, fully furnished, was moved. The mover placed a champagne glass full of water in the center of the dining room table. After removing only 2 platters, which were leaning on a shelf, he boasted that if any water was spilled during the move, there would be no charge. He was a man of his word and we paid for the move; not a drop was spilled.
